Preparation
- Generously spread butter or a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.
- Warm the pizza sauce slightly in the microwave or on the stove to prevent it from lowering the sandwich's internal temperature.
Assembly
- Place two slices of bread, butter-side down, on a cutting board or clean surface.
- Layer half of the mozzarella cheese evenly over the two slices of bread to create a protective barrier.
- Spread the warmed pizza sauce evenly over the cheese layer.
- Arrange the pepperoni slices over the sauce, and sprinkle with dried oregano, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese if using.
- Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and place the remaining slices of bread on top, butter-side up.
Cooking
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Carefully transfer the assembled sandwiches to the skillet.
- Cook slowly for 4-5 minutes, until the bottom is deeply golden and crispy.
- Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for another 4-5 minutes, until the second side is golden and the cheese is completely melted and bubbling.
- Remove from heat, let rest for 1 minute, slice, and serve immediately.
