Homemade Pumpkin Chai Cinnamon Rolls

Spiced pumpkin cinnamon rolls with chai cream cheese frosting

Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 1/2 cup warm milk 110°F
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
Chai Spice Blend
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
Filling
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans
Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp strong chai tea

Method
 

Prepare Dough
  1. Dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tsp sugar
  2. Mix pumpkin, egg, butter, and remaining sugar
  3. Combine with yeast mixture
  4. Gradually add flour and salt to form soft dough
First Rise
  1. Knead dough 5-7 minutes until smooth
  2. Place in oiled bowl, cover
  3. Let rise in warm place 1-1.5 hours until doubled
Assemble Rolls
  1. Roll dough to 12x18 inch rectangle
  2. Spread softened butter over dough
  3. Mix filling ingredients except pecans and spread evenly
  4. Sprinkle with chai spices and pecans
  5. Roll tightly from long end, seal seam
Second Rise & Bake
  1. Cut into 12 slices, place in buttered pan
  2. Cover, rise 30 minutes until puffy
  3. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until golden
Frosting
  1. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar
  3. Mix in vanilla and chai tea
  4. Spread on warm rolls before serving
