Ingredients
  

Brownie Layer
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Cookie Layer
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Method
 

Prepare Brownie Layer
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9 inch baking pan and line with parchment paper
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined
  6. Spread evenly in prepared pan
Prepare Cookie Layer
  1. In a medium bowl, cream together softened butter and both sugars until light and fluffy
  2. Beat in egg and vanilla
  3. In separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined
  5. Fold in chocolate chips
Assemble and Bake
  1. Drop cookie dough in small portions over brownie layer and spread gently
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes until cookie layer is golden and a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs
  3. Cool completely in pan before cutting into squares
